Should I be wearing underwear beneath my bicycle shorts, or does that defeat the intended design of the liner?

You are correct in your idea that underwear defeats the purpose of bike shorts.

Most underwear in cycling applications create 2 main problems - With your weight directly on the seams, you can become chafed over the course of a ride. Also, cycling shorts are designed to draw moisture away from the skin. Underwear will trap it and create all sorts of science experiments in your shorts and make a bad situation worse.
